An air compressor is a device that uses power given by an electrical motor, a diesel engine, or even a gas engine to transform it into energy kept in pressurised air, also known as compressed air. By operating through one of numerous strategies, the compressor pumps more and more air into a storage tank, thus pushing pressure to its highest potential. Should the pressure reach its engineered peak, this mechanism shuts down automatically. Then, compressed air remains in the container waiting to be used.
Boasting centuries of use, air compressors first graced the 19th century landscape as the power behind pneumatic tasks such as rock drilling and paint spraying. Unveiled in 1872, George Boley of Philadelphia patented the centrifugal air compressor type while the piston type still remains in circulation today.
The modern air compressor is an intricate assembly of parts, including a pump of the utmost importance, a motor for supplying the energy, an air tank that stockpiles the pressurized air, and controls that monitor the pressure and dispersion of the airflow. The pump serves as the heartbeat of the system while the motor is its source of strength. The air tank stows away compressed air and the controls oversee and maintain the pressure and rate of release.
A reciprocating air compressor utilizes a motorized crankshaft to power a piston, which then compresses the air. As the piston moves up the cylinder, it draws in air that is then compressed when the piston moves back down. This cycle repeats, creating an immense amount of air pressure.
When it comes to reciprocating compressors, there are many sizes available – from small, portable varieties to hulking industrial-grade machines. Dependent on the size, you can get a range of air pressure and flow.
Powered by a motor, this type of air compressor utilizes two intertwining rotors – similar to screws – to compress the air. As they rotate, they create a pocket which ensnares the air before constricting it. This process is referred to as a rotary screw compressor.
From handy, portable sizes to hulking industrial models, rotary screw compressors are an excellent choice when it comes to energy efficiency. Unlike the reciprocating type, these reliable machines can keep going and going – no need to pause for cooling.
A centrifugal compressor relies on a rotating impeller to draw air into its core and then propel the air outward, thereby compressing it. This force creates a centrifugal motion that propels the air to the sides of the compressor.
Ranging from mini, lightweight models to bulky, manufacturing-level mechanisms, centrifugal compressors are known for their prolonged resilience. With greater levels of efficiency than reciprocating ones, they can operate continuously without needing frequent breaks for temperature regulation.
Industries like automotive, manufacturing, construction, and mining use air compressors for a host of purposes. These compressors can contribute to power tools such as drills, sanders, and grinders. Moreover, it can be used for filling up tires, improvise pneumatic tools and clean parts with efficacy.
