An air compressor pressure switch is an essential device used on compressors for the suppression of potential risks. By actively monitoring the air pressure, the switch is programmed to automatically turn the compressor on and off to ensure safety. When the pressure builds beyond the limit set by the switch, it will shut off the system, while conversely, should the air pressure drop to a certain restrictor, it promptly turns on the compressor.
The pressure switch has a two-fold role: it guards the air compressor from harm by keeping it from overloading and it is part of the compressor’s pressure control system. This makes it an indispensable safeguard for the machine.
The pressure switch that is used for an air compressor is usually located close to the pressure gauge. To be complexly connected, a pressure-sensing tube is at work, which is filled with either a gas or a liquid sensitive to distinguishing levels of pressure.
The action of powering up the air compressor leads to the accumulation of gas and liquid in the pressure-sensing tube and a subsequent boost in the air pressure of its container. As a result, these substances located in the tube become engorged from the increased pressure.
A diaphragm connected to a switch activates the air compressor when pressure is applied. When the expanding liquid or gas pushes against the diaphragm, it moves downward and turns the switch on, thereby beginning the running of the compressor. When the pressure is released, the diaphragm is no longer pushed so it lifts up and again closes off the switch, halting the running of the compressor.
After reaching a predetermined level, the pressure switch will shut off the air compressor, referred to as the cut-out pressure. Conversely, when the air pressure inside the compressor’s tank declines to a preset level, the switch will activate the machine, which is known as the cut-in pressure.
A pressure differential exists between the cut-out pressure and the cut-in pressure, generally measuring 10 pounds per square inch (psi).
Safeguarding the air compressor from potential damage is the prime objective of the indispensable pressure switch. Its central role in regulating air pressure makes it an essential piece of the compressor’s system.
