In the past two decades, the presence of black air forces has increased substantially in the United States. According to recent research from the National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC), black personnel now comprise 6.5 percent of the total air force. This is a marked uptick from 2001, when that number was as low as four percent.
The surge in the number of African-American airmen is caused by a plethora of variables, such as the withdrawal of personnel from Iraq and Afghanistan, together with the retirement of older white airmen. Additionally, the expansion of the Air Force’s Reserve and Guard has increased the presence of black personnel in a disproportionate manner.
The enhancement of black air forces is an advantageous step forward, particularly since the Air Force has been consistently evaluated for its absence of diversity. In a service comprised mostly of white and male personnel, the influx of black servicemen and servicewomen signals that the Air Force is gradually progressing towards becoming more representative of the American population.
By having a higher concentration of airmen with different backgrounds, the Air Force stands to benefit when it comes to culture and climate. The unique presence of black airmen provides the organization with a range of invaluable perspectives and experience that can enable them to have an enhanced understanding of what an increasingly varied population requires.
The Air Force has experienced significant challenges in filling its ranks with highly qualified individuals, so the emergence of more African American airmen should provide a much-needed boost to recruitment and retention efforts. The augmentation of black servicemen and servicewomen will undoubtedly assist the Air Force in meeting its ambitions.
While it can be viewed as a cause for celebration that the amount of African American airmen has increased, the Air Force still has a long way to go when it comes to having true diversity. Currently, the service is massively comprised of Caucasians and males, leading to the desire for more women and ethnic minorities to join the ranks. To keep its title as a world-renowned air force, the Air Force must continue its commitment to initiating initiatives that draw in and keep individuals from all walks of life who possess and demonstrate remarkable skills and knowledge.
