The President of the United States is flown in a unique aircraft known as Air Force One – a Boeing 747-200B that has been specially modified to serve the commander-in-chief. Boasting a striking blue and white livery and an American flag on its tail, it is operated by the Presidential Airlift Group of the United States Air Force.
Since 1910, when Theodore Roosevelt became the first American President to take to the skies, US presidents have been regular aerial travelers. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first Commander-in-Chief to traverse the atmosphere while in office via plane, boarding the iconic Douglas C-54 Skymaster – otherwise known as the “Sacred Cow”. Fast forward to 1953 and Dwight Eisenhower welcomed the arrival of the first aircraft specifically designed for presidential flights; the Douglas VC-118 Liftmaster – or “Independence” – a revolutionary step in presidential air travel.
In 1990, a specially-crafted Boeing 747-200B was delivered to the US Air Force to begin its tenure as Air Force One. For twelve years, the aircraft served as the President’s mode of transportation, receiving its long-awaited upgrade in 2002. Among the many modernizations included a new suite for the President, state-of-the-art medical facility, and a significantly enhanced communication system.
Towering above the clouds is the powerful aircraft staffed by a crew of 26, with two pilots, two co-pilots, and 22 devoted crew members ensuring an efficient and safe flight. In addition, the President is ensured their safety and comfort with the accompaniment of a physician and a gifted security unit.
With an ample 4,000 square feet of space at its disposal, Air Force One helps the President and his team remain connected and productive while in the air. Inside it boasts a luxurious conference area as well as a plush dining room and a serene bedroom. To round up its features, the plane has integrated a truly cutting-edge communications system so that the President may still engage with world leaders and citizens at home.
For the ultimate protection of the President, Air Force One is equipped with the very latest security features. From bulletproof windows to a body designed to withstand a missile head-on, this impressive aircraft leaves nothing to chance. Furthermore, the fuel tanks are self-sealing and explosion-proof for maximum safety during high-risk flights.
When Air Force One is occupied by the President and flying, it is seen as American soil, guarded by the United States Secret Service. To this effect, it can be utilized for both governmental and personal journeys. Furthermore, distinguished foreign company or members of the military can take this chance to join the President onboard.
Standing as a tangible representation of American leadership, Air Force One symbolizes the Presidency around the globe and is unmistakable to anyone who has ever seen it. When our Commander-in-Chief is travelling in this plane, it serves as a visible representation of the U.S. to the international community.
