Through the process of enlistment, MEPS brings you to take the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). This assessment is integral to finding your place in the Air Force. The ASVAB guides you in discovering the right career path or Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) for you amongst the over 150 different job classifications it provides.
The ASVAB is an examination comprised of several timed portions, the most impactful of which – when applying for work in the Air Force – is the General Technical (GT) section. Having your GT performance reviewed, determines your AFQT score, which in turn segment you into one of four groups: I, II, III or IV.
Category I is the stellar result, representing the top tier achievers that make up only the 2% greatest success stories of all test-takers. A Category II rating signifies a noteworthy score, with the top 16% of test-takers attaining this distinction.
Being in the top 33% of all exam players qualifies you for Category III, indicating that you have done quite well. Even so, you still may need to strive a bit more so as to come across the job that is most suitable for your abilities.
If you fall into the lowest third of participants who took the exam, Category IV denotes your ranking. You may encounter difficulty when searching for a desirable position, but it is certainly not a bar to success. Take your time to scour the job market and make sure you don’t miss a good opportunity.
